The history of Ambalapadi is older than the Udupi Sri Krishna Matha itself. According to local lore and the Skanda Purana:
The Protector of the Region: Originally, the region was a dense forest. Goddess Mahakali is said to have manifested here first to protect the land from evil forces.
The Arrival of Lord Janardhana: Legend says that Lord Janardhana (a form of Vishnu) came to Ambalapadi in search of Goddess Mahakali. Finding her here, he decided to stay to provide "Abhaya" (protection) to his devotees.
The "Mother-Brother" Relationship: In local tradition, Lord Janardhana and Goddess Mahakali are worshipped with the sentiment of being siblings, working together to safeguard the town of Udupi.
